Do I need Qualifications to be a Professional Bookkeeper?

What skills do you ned to be a successful Bookkeeper (Accountant and Tax Agent)

Bookkeepers now no longer need to be a whizz at maths and arithmetic, thanks to the introduction of computer technology.

Bookkeepers need to be organised so that they keep clients’ personal and financial information secure and in an orderly manner, so that data and financial reports can be retrieved easily, available, and accessible.

Bookkeepers excel in business if they are good communicators, who are able to network to develop positive relationships built on honesty, trust and integrity.

Bookkeepers may have strong computer skills and chose to use accounting software to support their work, but equally can use simple digital software to meet the requirements of the client, depending on the clients’ many and varied needs and requirements.

Bookkeepers have a great ability to explain the business financial information in an understandable manner to clients that have no knowledge of bookkeeping as they have a down to earth approach.

Bookkeepers may also produce clients’ accounts and may be tax agents with HMRC filing monthly, quarterly, and annual returns on behalf of clients.

Bookkeepers may work for companies as an employee or freelance but may prefer to have many sole trader and partnership clients.

Bookkeepers are great at organising their time and multi-tasking.

Most importantly, Bookkeepers must be honest and trustworthy applying the law and following legal compliance. They must maintain confidentiality of clients. Not discussing information with other clients or third parties.

Bookkeepers need to be interested in financial legislation and current affairs to keep up to date with legislative changes.

The Bookkeepers Responsibilities

Bookkeepers are essential to all businesses, charities and clubs and societies. They organise financial information to provide understandable reports that help keep abreast of their financial situation. These reports help the organisation to make strategic decisions for the future.

Bookkeepers can choose to work for one organisation or have their own business working for many clients in different industries, so every day is varied. Bookkeepers have the freedom to choose.

Bookkeepers with their own business also have the freedom to choose the hours they work, take days off, time off and holiday when suits them.

Bookkeepers are in demand. And with the recent introduction of the UK government’s Making Tax Digital initiative, they will be in even more demand.

Bookkeeping is more than a job, it’s a profession, it’s a respected career.
